Qualy Time Attack – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Qualy Time Attack?
Qualy Time Attack is an organization created by car enthusiasts who were looking for more ways to compete and engage with the community. Our primary focus is in our new time attack system, which allows drivers to compete in an online time attack series at any track, any time, without having to travel or follow a set schedule. Members can join and get involved with the community for free, or begin competing by registering for a cup to officially compete for prizes and trophies. The drivers in each class that score the most points over the season will be our QTA champions.
How does Qualy Time Attack work?
The QTA season is broken up into 4 different cups: The Spring Cup, Summer Cup, Fall Cup, and Winter Special, with a duration of approximately 3 months each. Cars are separated into different classes based on their Motor and Modification level and compete in each cup to win points. Drivers register by paying an entry fee ($20) and selecting which car they wish to compete with. Drivers must register by the deadline to compete in that cup.
Drivers earn points by uploading their lap at any given track and configuration (Autobahn South, Gingerman, Road America) at the end of each cup. Points will be calculated by this formula: (fastest lap / your lap * 100, rounded to the nearest hundredth). Each track you attend is an opportunity to earn points. Only your fastest lap will count per track.
If you attend multiple tracks, you have multiple chances to score points. Points are accumulated through the end of Fall Cup and will determine the QTA class champions. Prizes will be determined for each of the five class winners for Stock, Street, Street-E, Track, and Unlimited.
There is also an unscored Historical Open for drivers to submit previous laps from 2015 to the next competitive cup. All of these laps will be verified by the Qualy team and added to your Driver Profile, the garaged car the laps belong to, and the all-time Leaderboard. The cost of the Historical Open is $20, but for a limited time it will come free with an entry into a competitive cup.
How does Qualy approach safety, traffic, and on-track conduct during events?
Safety is always the top priority. Drivers are expected to operate their vehicles responsibly, within their personal limits, and in full compliance with the rules and conduct standards of their event organizer. Qualy Time Attack is an asynchronous, results-based competition, not an on-track contest, and does not alter on-track rules or passing procedures. Traffic is a normal and unavoidable part of on-track driving, and drivers must never pressure, signal, or attempt to influence others for competitive advantage. All submitted laps are subject to review, and laps associated with unsafe or unsportsmanlike behavior may be rejected regardless of lap time.
Does it cost money?
It will cost $20 to enter into each time attack cup, which will allow drivers to compete for trophies and prizes, and to be officially recognized as time attack competitors. The fees are used to help cover platform operating costs, fund prizes and awards, and create stronger incentives for active participation.
How do you join?
QTA is currently open to all drivers. Please register for a competition and start competing!
What do I need?
- Required: A good quality action camera.
- Recommended: A timing app (e.g., Harry's Lap Timer, Track Addict) and a 10Hz+ GPS for accuracy.
- Verification: While telemetry is helpful, all laps are officially verified via the uploaded video.
How do I upload a lap?
After your track day, trim the video to show just your fastest lap and upload it on YouTube. Please trim the video or make a note of when the lap begins. Videos must be set to public or unlisted, otherwise we are unable to review the lap. Once uploaded, submit it via our Lap Upload form.
How do I know what class I am in?
Please read our Rules or use our Classing Questionnaire as a guide to figure out where your car belongs. Classes are split by Motor:
- A: up to 1.8L Forced Induction / up to 2.5L Naturally Aspirated / up to 1.3L Rotary Naturally Aspirated
- S: 1.9L FI – 2.5L FI / 2.6L – 3.7L NA / 1.3L Rotary FI / Single Motor Electric
- R: 2.6L FI – 3.5L FI+ / 3.8L NA – 5.0L NA / 1.4L Rotary FI – 1.9L Rotary FI / Dual Motor Electric
- X: 3.6L FI+ / 5.1L NA+ / 2.0L Rotary FI+ / Tri Motor Electric or greater
- U: Exclusion class regardless of motor for cars such as: Any Corvette above the base level, any 911 above the base level, any race-level production car (Ford Mustang GTD), and any supercars (Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc.). Please see here for the full list of exclusions.
And Modification level:
- Stock: Basically stock, plus a few reliability allowances
- Street: Basic bolt-ons
- Street-E: Street class + E85, engine swaps, a few further upgrades
- Track: Aero, race car for the street
- Unlimited: Anything goes
Please see the full ruleset to properly class your car. Though class naming conventions may be similar to those you have seen in other motorsports organizations, please check the rules – classing may be vastly different from other time attack groups. We took care in developing our ruleset and feel it is the best logical mix for our competitors. As time progresses, expect minor changes to be made to ensure a fair and competitive landscape.
We also understand that modifications can happen through the season/cup. If you modify your car mid-cup that puts it in a new class, you are allowed a 1-time waiver to move class without charge. You will keep the points you earned in the other class, but the accumulation will be separate from the points you earn in your new class. We expect our drivers to act with integrity – that's what makes this fun – please report if your car has been updated mid-cup that would put it in a new class.
When will my lap be confirmed?
Track Stewards will review laps and verify them before posting to the official Leaderboard. This process may take a few days, to ensure that quality laps are being uploaded — thank you for your patience!
How do I earn points?
At the end of each cup, points will be tallied by laps uploaded. All laps will earn points. If you drove at 3 different tracks during a cup, you have 3 different opportunities to earn points. Points will accumulate by the class your car is in, and the drivers who have the most points at the end of the Fall Cup will be our class champions.
What if I want to race more than one car?
We have built in the function for our drivers to race as many cars as they want in our time attack series. For each additional car/class that the driver wishes to compete in, drivers will enter the cup, paying $10 per each additional registration. Each car/class will accumulate points independently. The trick is in getting enough track days to submit laps for each car, and it may be more advantageous to race only one car.
What if I'm not very fast?
QTA is designed for all skill levels. Whether you're a veteran or a beginner, our goal is to foster a competitive but supportive community. Additionally, we are implementing Achievement Trophies that users can earn through various activities, and the Top 3 achievement trophy earners will also be eligible for prizes at the end of the season.
What is the Winter Special Cup?
The Winter Special Cup is a competition currently in development from December–February. Since winter conditions limit track access in many regions, this cup will be a limited competitive event. Entry will be $10 and points earned here will not go towards the annual championship.
